Morgan Library- Matthew Barney

Matthew Barney
- Shikenen Sengu 2006.

This is one of the many pieces that caught my attention while visiting the Morgan Library. It's interesting how he used his materials cautiously. His piece contained a proper use of limited color so the viewers can focus on the main thing. By having one whale in a darker tone I can sense that he is being overpowered. The silhouette underneath him shows that he is being held down against his will. It shows greif and sorrow. I later learned that the silhouette is symbolic to the whale fall. Which is when whaels die they tend to sink in the bottom of the ocean. Which is why the darkened whale seems to be dragging him along.
