Bakuman Volume 1 by Tsugumi Ohba
As the story takes place Ohba uses very limited dialogue. His use of quick gestures really catches ones attention. By looking at each image individually I can imagine how the character shifts from different emotions. For example on page 43 the protagonist Mashiro is empowered by different emotions and as a reader it is easier to see the confusion and the amount of stress that he is experiencing. Simply because of the change of background, instead of having an ordinary background Ohba collided the faces of three other characters that have been mocking Mashiro to be what he has to be and to be who he wants to become. In this specific part of the book Ohba presented Mashiro's feelings in a different way. Instead of showing each phase separately, Ohba created a memory where the character is taunted by realization. It's an interesting way to focus on things and see how he was able to capture all of that in just one image.
Pages 44 and 45 also showed a different technique of providing a different storyline. Not only did Ohba show how Mashiro shifted from various of emotions in one page, he also shifted the backgrounds. The background helped identify the characters emotions. Both the change of background and shading of clothes and emotions helped determine what was going through the characters mind. And I think this would be a great technique I would like to use in my project.
